How Many Feet of Movie Film Do You Have?

We no longer convert 8mm or 16mm film. This information is left here for your benefit only, if any.

The quickest way to estimate footage is to measure the reel diameter at the outer edge of the film. Use the guide below to estimate how many feet you’ll send—no need to be exact. We’ll confirm the precise footage during transfer (16mm reels of the same size typically hold about twice as much as 8mm/Super 8).

Reel Diameter → Approx. Feet

  • 3" — 50 ft
  • 4" — 100 ft
  • 5" — 200 ft
  • 6" — 300 ft
  • 7" — 400 ft
  • 8" — 600 ft
  • 10" — 800 ft
  • 12" — 1200 ft

Tip: If you’re unsure, estimate conservatively. We only bill for the actual footage digitized.

Before You Ship

  • Measure the diameter across the full reel, not the hub.
  • 16mm reels of the same diameter usually hold ~2× the footage of 8mm/Super 8.
  • It’s fine to estimate low—we’ll calculate the exact total during transfer and bill the difference.
