Slide Scanner Recommendations
For the adventurous, technical, and very patient: here’s background on some once-popular film/slide scanners— and why we generally recommend letting us handle the scanning if you’re aiming for consistent, high-quality results.
Before you buy, please read our page “Can You Do It Yourself?” We don’t sell equipment; the notes below are for reference only.
High-end option (historical)
Creo EverSmart Supreme II
A professional flatbed/scanner system (Creo later part of Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group). Very high quality, very complex, and historically very expensive. Throughput could be high with the right workflow, but this category isn’t practical for most home users.
Dedicated film scanners (legacy)
Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED
4,000 dpi optical resolution; supported multiple formats (35mm, 110, 120). Known for quality, but long discontinued and pricey/finicky on the used market with modern OS support hurdles.
Microtek ArtixScan 120tf
4,000 dpi, supported 35mm and medium format with holders; features like autofocus and motion control. Again: discontinued, and driver/support realities make them tough today.
Braun Multimag Slide Scanner 4000
Designed for 35mm transparencies (24×36mm), including bulk scanning with certain magazines. Marketed with Digital ICE, USB/FireWire. These can work, but reliability, workflow complexity, and part availability can be limiting.
Reality check
- Most of these models are discontinued and require older computers/drivers to run smoothly.
- Color, dust removal, and consistency take real time—especially across large collections.
- If you value your time and want consistent 4000 ppi results with pro Photoshop cleanup, we’re here.
