Some of PS problems are just the result of a corrupt preferences file. Before trying a re-installation it makes sense reset this file first.
First press and continue holding down all three Ctrl+Alt+Shift buttons
Now simply open Photoshop by using your mouse.
As Photoshop loads, you should get a prompt asking if you would like to "delete the Photoshop settings file". Click yes.
Now, when you start photoshop you will have a clean slate.
Had to use this to solve a problem with Photoshop not displaying thumbnail images correctly when "saving as" and "opening" files. The thumbnails were flopped. Upside down and backwards. Stangest thing. Couldn't get this to stop even with a fresh install of Photoshop.
After this "fix", I still had the problem but I noticed that the "browser" looked strange. I clicked on the box in the file browser that said "Use System Browser". When I did that it switched from the Adobe Browser to the System Browser and the thumbnails were no longer flopped. I was also having trouble saving Tif files and even doing a Save As from a Tif file.
